How fast do you get paid through an umbrella company? Guide 2026

Salary & payout 7 min Uppdaterad 24 augusti 2026

How fast you get paid through an umbrella company is decided by three clocks, not one: how long the client has to pay the invoice, how long the company takes from the client's payment to your salary, and whether you can get the salary in advance before the client has paid. At Paidin the salary is paid out the banking day after the client's payment arrives, at no extra cost. With 30-day payment terms, the standard in Sweden, the salary normally lands around day 31 to 33 after the invoice was sent. If you need the money sooner you can agree shorter terms with the client, or apply for an advance, which is assessed case by case.

The three clocks that decide when the salary lands

When someone asks "how fast do you get paid", three entirely different periods are usually mixed together. They are worth keeping apart, because the umbrella company fully controls only one of them.

1. The payment terms: the client's time

The payment terms are the number of days the client has to pay from the invoice date. The standard in Sweden is 30 days net. This clock is the longest of the three, and it is controlled by you and your client, not by the umbrella company.

Two things to know:

  • Shorter terms require the client's agreement in advance. Under Swedish law a client always has the right to pay within 30 days unless something else has been agreed, regardless of what the invoice says. If you want 10, 15 or 20 days it must be agreed before the invoice is sent.
  • The clock starts when the invoice is sent, not when the work is finished. Waiting two weeks to invoice adds two weeks of waiting that no payment terms in the world can recover.

2. The processing time: the company's time

This is the only clock the umbrella company fully controls: the time from the client's money arriving in the company's account until the salary leaves for yours. This is where the providers differ, from the next banking day to several banking days, and sometimes the faster option costs extra.

At Paidin the salary is paid the banking day after the payment arrives. If the client pays on the due date, the money is visible in Paidin's account the following day at the earliest, and the salary then leaves the next banking day. That applies to every invoice, with no surcharge.

3. Advance payment: getting the salary before the client pays

An advance means the umbrella company pays your salary before the client has paid the invoice, carrying the amount itself until the payment arrives. It is the only way to get the salary earlier than the payment terms allow, and it is also the one most often misunderstood: an advance is not faster handling of money that is already there, it is a commitment the company takes on, which is why it is assessed.

Far from every umbrella company offers it. The service goes by different names, advance, express or FastPay, and several providers do not have it at all. It is worth checking before you choose a company, because it rarely shows up in fee comparisons: a table listing percentages says nothing about whether the option exists.

Check the fact on the company's own website, preferably in the general terms, the employment contract or the support pages. An answer from an AI service or a search result is not a sufficient source: both summarise what is published on the web, and most of what is published on the web is marketing. Comparisons written by the industry's own providers are read in the same way and repeated as fact. If you cannot find the answer in the terms, ask outright before you register.

That not everyone offers it is to be expected. An advance means the company lends its own money against an invoice that has not been paid, and takes the risk if the client never pays. That requires both capital and a credit assessment per invoice.

At Paidin the advance is called FastPay. It is selected when the invoice is created, assessed individually against both you and your client, and costs 7.9 per cent of the invoice amount instead of the ordinary fee scale. Do not count on an advance for your first invoices: without history there is nothing to assess, and a rejection does not mean anything is wrong with you or your assignment.

How long it takes in practice: three worked examples

All examples assume the invoice is sent on a weekday and that the client pays on time. At Paidin an invoice created on a weekday between 08:00 and 17:00 is normally sent the same day.

Example 1: Consultant with 30-day terms

Event Day
Invoice sent Day 0
Due date, client pays Day 30
Payment visible in Paidin's account Day 31
Salary paid out Day 32 (next banking day)

Just over a month, of which 30 days are the client's. If day 31 falls on a Friday, the salary goes out on Monday.

Example 2: Tradesperson with agreed 10-day terms

Event Day
Invoice sent Day 0
Due date, client pays Day 10
Payment visible in Paidin's account Day 11
Salary paid out Day 12

The same processing, but twenty days earlier. The only thing that changed is the agreement with the client, and that costs nothing.

Example 3: Approved advance

Event Day
Invoice created with FastPay, terms accepted Day 0
Application assessed and approved Day 0 to 1
Salary paid out Shortly after the decision
Client pays Day 30

The fee is 7.9 per cent instead of the scale. If the application is not approved, the invoice is sent as usual and the salary follows example 1.

What can make it take longer

Four things extend the wait, and none of them is down to the umbrella company's processing:

  • The client pays late. The most common reason. Paidin sends reminders regularly, and you can see the invoice status in your invoice list. A personal message from you to the client is usually what gets things moving.
  • The client pays only part. The salary is paid when the invoice is fully paid. A partial amount sits there until the rest arrives.
  • ROT, RUT and green technology. The client pays their share, then the rest is claimed from Skatteverket. The salary is paid only once the whole invoice is settled, which can take several weeks after the client's payment. If Skatteverket rejects the claim, the client is invoiced for the remaining amount.
  • Foreign client. Payments from abroad often take a few extra banking days to arrive, and in another currency the exchange is added on top.

Weekends and public holidays affect all three clocks, since both the client's bank and the payout count in banking days.

Comparison: how umbrella companies handle the payout

There are only two ways to get the salary: after the client has paid, or before. The latter goes by different names at different companies, advance, express or FastPay, but is always the same thing: the company carries the money until the client pays. The figures below come from each company's own price page, checked in July 2026, and are shown in full in the comparison of umbrella companies.

Model How it works Examples
Payout after the client's payment The salary leaves one or a few banking days after the client has paid. No extra cost. Paidin (next banking day), Cool Company (24 hours), Workamo (1 to 3 banking days), Frilans Finans (5 banking days)
Advance before the client's payment The salary is paid before the client has paid, after assessment and at a higher fee. Not offered by everyone. Paidin (FastPay, 7.9 per cent, assessed individually), Cool Company (ExpressPay, 2.59 per cent on top of the ordinary 5.98 per cent, so 8.57 per cent)

What is worth comparing is therefore the number of banking days after the client's payment, since that is the only time the company itself controls. At Paidin it is the next banking day, on every invoice.

How to get paid as fast as possible

  1. Invoice the same day the work is finished. The payment terms run from the invoice date.
  2. Agree the payment terms before you start. 10 or 15 days is common for smaller assignments, but it has to be agreed in advance to apply.
  3. Check the client's invoicing details. An invoice with the wrong reference or company name gets stuck in the client's approval flow and takes time to sort out, in the worst case weeks.
  4. Check your bank account number. An incorrect account number is the only thing that can delay the payout on Paidin's side.
  5. Choose a company where fast payout is the standard, not an add-on. At Paidin the next banking day is the rule for every invoice, and your first invoice is also free of charge regardless of the amount.

Common questions

How long does it take from the client's payment until I get the salary?

At Paidin the salary leaves the banking day after the client's payment reaches Paidin's account. If the client pays on a Friday, the system sees it over the weekend and the salary is paid on Monday, the next banking day.

Does every umbrella company offer advance payment?

No. Far from all of them do, and it rarely appears in fee comparisons. Check the company's own terms or support pages before you choose, regardless of what a comparison or an AI answer says.

Can I get the salary before the client has paid?

Yes, through an advance, at the companies that offer it. At Paidin it is called FastPay, selected when the invoice is created and assessed case by case against both you and your client. The fee is 7.9 per cent of the invoice amount. New users without invoicing history are rarely granted an advance, and FastPay cannot be selected on a first invoice covered by the free first invoice offer, on ROT and RUT invoices, or during an ongoing wage garnishment with the Swedish Enforcement Authority.

Will I get the salary the same day the invoice is sent?

Only through an approved advance. No client pays the same day an invoice is sent, so "same day" always means the umbrella company is carrying the money, and then the application is assessed first.

What happens if the client does not pay on time?

The salary waits until the payment arrives. Paidin sends reminders regularly, and you can see in your invoice list whether the invoice has been paid. It is worth contacting the client yourself as well; that is usually what works fastest.

Can I choose to receive the salary later?

Yes. At Paidin you can pause the payout on a sent invoice, either until further notice or until the 25th, for example to collect several salaries on the same day. Pausing does not affect when the client pays, only when the salary goes out.

Do the payment terms affect the fee?

No. Paidin's fee follows the invoice amount, from 2.9 per cent, and is the same whether the client has 10 or 30 days. Only advances have a fee of their own.
