Unemployment insurance and umbrella employment: how it works

Many freelancers and contractors wonder how unemployment insurance works when assignments come and go. A common concern is being left without a safety net when work dries up. As an umbrella employee through Paidin, you are in a more secure position than you might think. You are covered by the same unemployment insurance system as all other employees in Sweden.

What is unemployment insurance (a-kassa)?

Unemployment insurance in Sweden, commonly called "a-kassa", is a financial safety net for people who become unemployed. The insurance has two parts: a basic benefit and an income-based benefit. The basic benefit provides a lower amount and does not require membership in an unemployment fund. The income-based benefit provides higher compensation and is calculated from your previous income. To receive income-based compensation, you either need to be a member of an unemployment fund or meet the requirements of the new income-based system that took effect on 1 October 2025.

Regardless of which part of the insurance you use, you need to meet a work requirement. This means you must have worked a certain amount during a defined period before becoming unemployed. As an umbrella employee through Paidin, you accumulate work history in the same way as a traditionally employed person.

Unemployment insurance as an umbrella employee through Paidin

Your work through Paidin is registered as regular employment, not as self-employment or business activity. Paidin pays employer contributions, deducts tax and reports your income to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) through monthly employer declarations. These income records then form the basis for calculating your unemployment benefit.

This model eliminates the uncertainty that often comes with running your own business. You do not need to worry about whether your business structure affects your right to benefits. Paidin ensures all formal requirements are met, which means you can focus on your assignments and feel confident that your income qualifies you for unemployment insurance.

It is worth noting that you build your protection gradually. The more you work and invoice through Paidin, the stronger your unemployment insurance foundation becomes. Every invoice paid out as salary strengthens your position should you need to apply for benefits in the future.

The new income-based unemployment insurance (from 1 October 2025)

On 1 October 2025, a new income-based unemployment insurance came into effect in Sweden. The major change is that you can receive income-based compensation even without being a member of an unemployment fund. Eligibility is based on your reported income. However, your membership duration affects how much compensation you receive:

Membership duration Compensation level
12 months or longer 80% of previous income
6 to 11 months 60% of previous income
5 months or shorter 50% of previous income
Not a member 50% of previous income

The difference between 50% and 80% is significant. With an income base of SEK 34,000 per month, this means SEK 17,000 without membership compared to SEK 27,200 with at least 12 months of membership.

The new income-based system relies on data that employers report to Skatteverket. Since Paidin reports your income every month through the employer declaration, your records are already in the system. You do not need to do anything extra for your income to be counted.

In addition to a higher compensation level, membership in an unemployment fund provides access to counselling and support in job searching. The basic principle is clear: as an umbrella employee through Paidin, you qualify for the new income-based unemployment insurance regardless of whether you are a member or not. However, Paidin recommends joining an unemployment fund early, since at least 12 months of membership is required to reach the highest compensation level of 80%.

The difference compared to running your own company

If you run a sole proprietorship (enskild firma), the rules are different. The unemployment fund treats you as a self-employed business owner, which means you must be able to demonstrate that your business has been completely shut down before you can receive benefits. It is not enough to simply lack assignments; you need to deregister your F-tax certificate and essentially close down the business.

As an umbrella employee through Paidin, you do not have this problem. Your relationship with Paidin functions as employment. If an assignment ends and you have no new work, you can register as a job seeker with the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen) and apply for unemployment benefits in the same way as any other employee. You do not need to deregister anything or prove that a business has been closed.

Additionally, verifying your income is simpler. Self-employed individuals often need to document their income through annual accounts and tax returns, which can be time-consuming and cause delays. With Paidin, your income is already reported to Skatteverket month by month and can be easily verified.

Tip: choose the right unemployment fund

Even though the new income-based system does not require membership, there are good reasons to join an unemployment fund. Most funds offer support during unemployment, help with applications and sometimes additional benefits beyond the basic compensation.

As an umbrella employee through Paidin, you can choose the unemployment fund that best fits your industry. Common options for freelancers and contractors include Unionen, Akademikernas a-kassa and Alfa-kassan. Alfa-kassan is an option if you prefer not to join a union-affiliated fund, as it is open to everyone.

Keep in mind that some funds have waiting periods. Certain unemployment funds require you to have been a member for a specific period before you can receive full benefits. By joining early, you secure your protection from the start.

Frequently asked questions

Is my income through Paidin counted as employment income?

Paidin pays employer contributions and reports your salary to Skatteverket. Your income is treated as regular employment income in all contexts, including when calculating unemployment benefits.

Do I need to be a member of an unemployment fund to receive benefits?

No, it is not a requirement since 1 October 2025. You can receive income-based compensation without membership, but the compensation level will be 50% of your previous income. With at least 12 months of membership, the level increases to 80%. Paidin recommends joining an unemployment fund early to secure the highest compensation.

What happens if my assignments end?

If you have no new assignments, you can register as a job seeker with Arbetsförmedlingen and apply for unemployment benefits. Since you are employed through Paidin, you do not need to deregister any business or close a company. Your situation is treated the same as for someone whose fixed-term employment has ended.
